I am Soca

Dear WISY,

I've been trying to push my music in the soca scene for a while now and it seems the harder I work, the less I accomplish.  I'm from an island that is dancehall dominated and and I swear every time I tell someone I sing soca, they tell me I was born on the wrong island.  Since when does geographic location determine what sort of music you should sing?

I really want to break the stereotype and prove everyone wrong, but there is absolutely no support for a soca artist in this country.

I would appreciate it if some of your readers could leave some advice for me.  They don't have to be in the same situation either.  I just want to know how to proceed with soca.

Thank you.

Signed,
I am Soca

  1. In this age of technology, geographic location may discourage you but it shouldn't stop you from pushing your music. Use the mediums that are available to you; YouTube, Sound Cloud, etc. to get your music out there. Once the quality is good and people like it, you should get the recognition you are seeking.

Send us an update when you prove them wrong! ;-)

  2. I would say market to the audience you want to capture. Trying to sell soca to a dancehall dominated audience is unwise. Get your music/product known among soca loving audiences, which would most likely mean focusing on other countries, i.e Barbados, et al. Estelle didn't feel appreciated in her country and focused her R&B outside of the UK. She seems to be doing well. Follow your soca community, let them know what you have to offer and they will support you. Today's technology can put you before international audiences and you don't have to leave your island. Think big.
