Dear WISY,
I am a 22 year old person and I live in the Caribbean.  Most of my family lives in England and I hope to someday join them up there.  Whenever they post pictures of themselves to Facebook I admire how smooth and flawless their skin is.  They have even become lighter due to being out of the Caribbean hot sun.  Since seeing this, I have begun to bleach my skin with creams and gels.

Some people are criticizing the way I look but my close friends think I look nice and they have begun to bleach their skin also.  If I were to send you a picture of me before I started bleaching to now, you wouldn’t believe I was the same person.  I think I am more attractive and I have a better chance of succeeding in life with lighter skin.

The other day I saw a short documentary on YouTube about a family that bleaches and there was a doctor on there who said bleaching is very dangerous and I’ve heard it can cause skin cancer.  But I know people who have bleached for years and years and they are not sick.  The only problem they have is that they can’t go out into the sun unless they have an umbrella. Just like what Kartel say:  “If yuh a bleacha go back home, guh fi di umbrella caz di sun ah bun”.

Honestly, I’m a bit nervous about the idea that I could get sick from skin bleaching but then I think about how nice I look now and all the compliments I get from my friends because my skin “tun up”!

Can you please tell me if you’ve heard of anyone getting sick or even dying from bleaching? If not, do you find reason for me to stop?  I also want to know if there is anybody out there who can tell me if they have bleached and gotten sick because of it.

Thank you.
Signed,
Fake Browning

  1. why??? honestly there is nothing uglier than a bleached skin... your friends will tell you that of course because they themselves are doing it.. chick, BLACK is BEAUTIFUL.. have you ever looked at a pic with the majority being white and only one black person? tell me which is more beautiful... i know of many "high colored" people who would love to have a darker skin tone thats why they tan so much. and jus so you know,a black person skin doesnt wrinkle very easily... STAP BLEACH!!!its not healthy , nothing about that can be healthy... ugh

    6. White people use tanning beds to get darker...that causes cancer but they don't care. If you don't care about damaging your skin, other people shouldn't care either.

  3. Dear FB,

Your letter is a bit perplexing. You say you have begun to bleach your skin as a result of your relatives’ “smooth and flawless” skin. Lighter skin does not equate to smooth and flawless. I have seen many a women with light skin that you would mistake for Dalmatians once their concealer is removed.

My dear, you should be nervous about using any chemical process on or in your body, especially without medical supervision.

While I have not heard about anyone dying from complications related to skin bleaching, the possibilities of damaging your skin permanently do exist. You may develop an allergy to what you are using, resulting in skin irritation, burning, itching or skin that crusts over.

You are most likely using prescription creams to lighten your skin, such as those containing hydroquinone, which are often used to treat Melasma. But I doubt you are using them as prescribed or even with a prescription. Either way, my counsel is the same – go see a licensed, board certified dermatologist, tell him/her what you are doing and what you want to achieve. Then you will be doing what is best for your skin. If you want lighter skin, your dermatologist will tell you the healthiest ways to achieve that. If you simply want healthy, clear skin, you will be guided in that direction.

If you want to avoid darkening of your skin’s pigmentation, I recommend applying a sunscreen with a higher SPF, such as SPF 45 or greater when spending time outdoors. Physical blockers containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are some of the most effective sunscreens. These creams act as a physical barrier to UV radiation and don't allow any of the sun's rays to reach your skin. Wearing a broad-brimmed hat and sun-protective clothing will also help protect your skin.

    Walk good,
    #TeamWISY

PS – I know your inquiry surrounded the health risks of using bleaching creams and gels and we have answered that specifically. However, we want to make it clear that we are opposed to skin bleaching and by no means encourage it. Our ultimate wish for you would be to stop bleaching.
