I Don't Want to Get Infected - She's Positive, I'm Negative

Dear WISY,

I'm a negative woman in love with a positive woman.  I really love her a lot and would like to spend the rest of my life with her, but the question is, how do I avoid getting infected?  What should I do and what should I not do?

WISY's Advice:

Dear ACL,

I'm not sure of your location and your level of access to quality healthcare, but there are drugs currently available that reduce the chances of transmitting HIV (I'm assuming you're referring to HIV.  Please correct me if I'm wrong) from partner to partner.  You and your partner should both visit a physician for the best possible healthcare advice.  My knowledge is limited but I can say that you should always practice safe sex.  Use dental dams for oral sex, use toys to pleasure each other without exchanging body fluids.  If you can't, then abstain.  As I said previously, my knowledge is limited, so please seek the advice of a professional.

I hope everything works out for the best.

UPDATE: He Left Me Alone, I Have a New Question

Dear WISY,

It's me again.  I wrote to you about the guy who has a girlfriend and won't leave me alone.  I took your advice and continued to block him if he found another way to contact me but that didn't work.  His messages became very threatening and offensive, so I called the cops on him.  The cops didn't want to take me seriously at first, but I went to the police station and showed them all the attempts he made to talk to me and of course I showed them the messages.  They told me that they would contact him and warn him to keep away from me, but told me that I should get a restraining order...πŸ™„ restraining orders are useless in ________!

Anyway, I left and immediately called my ex to tell him what was going on.  Before you ask, I went to my ex because we are still very close and he will have my back always.  So, yea I told him about what was going on and he agreed that he would confront the guy on my behalf.  He is a man of his word and he didn't waste any time contacting the guy and telling him to back off.  He even told him that he would contact his girlfriend if he didn't stop contacting me.  The guy seemed afraid and told my ex that he didn't really know me like that and that I was lying on him πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.  He said to keep his name out of his mouth and to never contact him again.  I felt relief about the whole situation and even felt in the mood to give my ex a little something of what he's been missing πŸ˜‹.

Now, I have a different question.  Thanks, by the way, for helping me through my situation. What you said worked very well.  But, my new question is all about my ex.  We are so close still and the sex was so good and we had a good talk after we had sex. I wonder if I should get back with him.  We broke up because he was cheating on me, but that was like 5 years ago.  He has grown and matured now.  I think we could work out well but my lingering question is if he will cheat again because they say "once a cheater always a cheater".  Your advice is appreciated again πŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ½.

WISY's Advice:

Dear AQ,

So glad to hear things worked out for the best with that situation.  I was really concerned, and I suggest you still get the restraining order so that you are protected and have certain rights should he try anything again.

On to the next or should I say...on to the ex!  As far as that is concerned, I think it's really sweet that your ex still looks out for you and is there for you in this sort of way.  That says a lot, in my opinion.  I don't see the harm in exploring a relationship with him again if he has in fact grown psychologically.  You need to be sure that you are over the hurt he caused you previously because it won't work if you continue to punish him for what he did (not saying you are, but want to bring that to your attention).  Just be aware of any behaviors that suggest dishonesty on his part, and most importantly, do not tolerate it if you discover he hasn't changed.  Just work on each other, be honest with one another, communicate, learn each other's love language.  Take it slow and see what happens.

Feel free to write again with an update. 😊

Does He Like Me?

Dear WISY,

I usually don't write to advice columns but I'm desperate at this point.  So, I've known this guy for almost 2 years now. He recently broke up with his girlfriend (it lasted 1 month).  At first I didn't like him because of how we met.  He sat behind me in class and on the first day he pulled my hair (as a joke) to ask for help on a question.  We eventually grew as friends and have become kind of close. We are always play fighting and joking around with each other, just being goofy in general.  Recently I realized I liked him as more than a friend.  I have not told anyone, and I keep thinking about him.  I'm not sure why but I just cant tell if he likes me.

Sincerely,
Me

WISY's Response:

Dear Me,

A man will usually let you know if he's interested or not.  If he doesn't come out and say it, his actions will tell you.  It's possible that he feels the same way that you do, but he may not want to ruin the friendship or may be shy.  However, I think that if he truly has fallen in love with you then he will not be able to hide his feelings any longer.  It's a man's nature to pursue what he wants, so let nature take its course.

BUT, if you find that your need to know is overwhelming then go ahead and ask him how he feels.  It is a beautiful thing when a friendship evolves to romance, so I do hope that you both are on the same page and you create something beautiful together.

He Has a Girlfriend but He Won't Leave Me Alone

Dear WISY,

There is this guy from my past who is borderline harassing me. I made the mistake of sleeping with him and ever since that, he has been stalking me. The craziest thing is that he has a long-term girlfriend and kids. He is always posting her on social media and professing his love for her, but continues to insist that I call him or complains that I don't talk to him anymore. I told him that my involvement with him was a mistake and that made him want me more or something.  He won't leave me alone!  It's as if he disregards everything I tell him about not wanting to be with him and talks to me like we're a loving couple. It's so weird to me.

I sent you a message about telling his girlfriend and you all kind of went in on me. Well, I took the advice and blocked him.  Now, he's using other accounts to contact me.  I really believe that he will stop if his girlfriend finds out. With the new information considered, what do you think I should do now?

Signed,
Ready to Expose

WISY's Response:

Dear Ready,

I remember your inbox note a while back and you asking me to post your question to the Dear WISY group on Facebook.  This is the message you sent:  "There's this guy who is always sending me DMs and he has a wife or girlfriend (not sure if they're married). He basically wants to cheat with me and I reject him all the time. Do I have a right to tell his woman about him?".  We didn't go in on you - the responses were just frank.  Thanks for trusting the crew to give you advice.  😊

Okay, now that I have more and accurate information, I am concerned that this guy has developed an obsession with you.  Telling his girlfriend will do little to stop him from contacting you if that's the case.  He will find a way to interact with you without her knowledge and if she leaves him, his pursuit of you will be relentless.  If he continues to pester you, ignore him and continue to block him.  If his attempts become too much for you or if he starts trying to get your attention in person, call the cops or get one of your family members or friends to scare him off (I've done that and it worked).  Whatever you do, be careful.  I've heard too many stories about men not being able to handle rejection.

Please keep me updated.  This is concerning.

How Do I Get Over Him?

Dear WISY,

I need advice on the terrible relationship I’ve had for 2 years now.  Long story short, throughout these 2 years I have never received a birthday present, went out on a date, and he never opened up to me even though, I opened up to him.  I gave him my all; down to my last $20, supported him through tough times and all I got in return was hurt, hateful words, no understanding from him, pitiful 'I love yous', and a reminder that I was never his first priority.  I held on because I love too much and I'm a very emotional person on the inside but I've learned my lesson.  I got myself into this by trying to be positive and give love knowing he was a broken person and I wasn’t going to receive any love like the one I gave him back.

Side note:  we are not together anymore.  I stopped answering his texts, so he blocked me on everything.  It's very hard trying to get over this. What do I do?

Sincerely,
Anonymous

WISY's Response:

Hey Love,

First, I'm glad to hear you are no longer involved in that relationship.  It sounds horrible and I know it must have been emotionally draining and damaging.  Now, it's time for you to heal from two years of hurt and pain so that you do not repeat this cycle in your next relationship.

You have already proven that you have great character by consciously trying to see the best in someone who is toxic. But I know that you now realize that he was not worth you losing your own happiness, value, and sanity over. No one is or will ever be worth that.

It's time to love on yourself like you never have before. Really delve into your soul and reconnect with or discover the things that make you whole. Do things that will build you up emotionally and psychologically. Surround yourself with people who are going to be a positive influence. Take yourself out on dates, do the things you love, travel, read new books - empower yourself.

You will have difficult periods throughout this, but those difficult times will decrease until they no longer exist.  Just allow yourself to ride through all the emotions.  It's the only way to get it all out and truly heal.  Just know that the pain and hurt is temporary as long as you make an effort to move through it all honestly and heal.

Why Won't He Have Date Night with Me?

Dear WISY,

I am frustrated that my husband no longer takes me out on date nights, and is spending his spare money on his hobby (the car).  He buys car parts on a monthly basis for his hobby.  When we go out, he expects me to split the bill.  I feel disrespected, yet I’m not sure if I should be feeling this way?!  I have spoken to him about date nights and it may seem like I nag him. I didn’t mention it for a while as it’s disappointing.  How can I get a date night with out nagging?

Signed,
I Need Date Night
WISY's Response:

Dear INDN,

I believe date night is extremely important for couples, so please discard this idea that you are nagging.  Another belief of mine is the importance of compromise in a relationship.  I think you should start this off by suggesting a date night that your husband may be interested in - maybe something involving the automotive world.  In turn, he may be more inclined to compromise and go on a date that involves something of your interest.

You should continue to express your feelings to your husband.  It's important that he understands your need for one-on-one time, and that date night is something that you initially did and want to continue.  Tell him that his time spent alone with you is validating for you.  Perhaps you can introduce him to the five love languages - The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts or begin to explore them yourself (if you haven't already).  You will also discover your husband's love language and understand him better.

Hopefully these suggestions will jolt him to understand that his car is not the only one who needs his time.

I Cheated with His Cousin

Dear WISY,

I need advice.  This past June makes 6 years that I've been with my boyfriend.  I'm in my early thirties, and I don't think my boyfriend is on the same page as I am because he seems to be dragging his feet when it comes to getting serious about our future.  I think I know why he is doing this. Okay, this is a long story, but I will try to make it as short as possible.

A few years ago, I cheated on him with his cousin.  I know this sounds cliche, but I don't know how it happened - it just did!  One mistake turned into a full on affair and we eventually got caught.  We both cut the cousin off completely and worked hard to get things back on track.  I understood that he was hurt and wanted revenge on me, so I excused his cheating incidents.  I guess he got over it because we were better than ever after a while, but I feel like he still has that incident in the back of his mind.  Like he's afraid to move forward with me.  I know he loves me, but I think he's afraid to trust me to be his wife.

I am tired of talking about it with him because he just tells me he doesn't want to talk about it and gets angry with me for a few days.  Everything is perfect except for this and I don't know what to do about it.  I don't want to break up with him because I know he loves me as much as I love him.

Signed,
Ready for the Next Step

Dear Ready,

First off, I can't ignore the fact that you allowed him to cheat as a means to even the playing field.  That is the most unhealthy thing I've heard in a while.  That action is to blame for all of what you're dealing with now.  You should have worked through the issue in ways that didn't include the genitalia of other women.

Those past occurrences of infidelity are definitely hindering you two from moving forward.  Instead of trying to talk it through alone, I believe it would be best to sit down with a therapist and work through the reasons for your boyfriend's anger and hesitation to move forward with you.

It's possible that your boyfriend may be reluctant to see a therapist, so you will need to let him know the importance of beginning the conversation.  Try this by taking a different approach.  For example, you could write him a note expressing how much you value him and want him to be confident in your loyalty to him.  Tell him that you're not trying anger him, but you feel the need for the both of you to completely heal from the past.  Ultimately, try something other than what you've been doing that has led to a dead end.

I think you two will be fine.  It seems that the love is there.  You just need to put in the work.

Should I Ask Him to Move in with Me?

Dear WISY,

I don't usually write to people for advice, but I need some help.  I have been with my boyfriend for 2 and a half years, and I feel like it's time for us to get more serious.  I have been hinting to him that I want him to propose, but he's not getting it.  All of my friends are getting engaged and married and I'm just sitting here looking stupid with this man I've been with for over two years.

I think I should ask him to move in together.  I am not one of those women who think it's wrong to live together before marriage.  I believe a couple should know how they will gel before commitment.

What do you think about me initiating the move in request?  This is okay to post.  I would like to hear different opinions.

Signed,
Ready

WISY's Response:

Dear Ready,

I think it's perfectly fine for you to ask him, but please understand that asking him to move in with you is not a guarantee that he will propose.  If anything, he will probably take that as a sign that you are willing to move forward as is.

My advice is that you stop hinting and start being blunt about your desires.  Communication is always key.  Once you talk to him, you'll know if he wants to take it to the next level with you or not.
